High-performance raw materials are carefully selected:
- UHMWPE (Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene) fibers: Chosen for exceptional tensile strength and abrasion resistance, critical for marine load-bearing.
- PP (Polypropylene) resin: Selected for natural buoyancy (key for floating functionality) and moisture resistance.
- Danline-specific additives: Include UV stabilizers (to combat marine sunlight exposure) and anti-aging agents (to prevent degradation from saltwater).
The PP resin is first melted (at 180–220°C) and mixed with additives; UHMWPE fibers are pre-cut to uniform lengths (typically 5–10mm) to ensure even distribution in the composite.
Two types of yarns are produced to form the rope’s structure, tailored for 8 or 12 strands:
- UHMWPE-reinforced PP yarn (core): The molten PP-additive mixture is extruded around the pre-cut UHMWPE fibers, forming continuous composite yarns. These yarns are drawn (stretched) to align polymer molecules, boosting tensile strength, then cooled in a water bath to solidify.
- PP outer yarn: Pure PP resin (with UV stabilizers) is extruded into thin filaments, bundled, and twisted into yarns—these form the outer layer of each strand, enhancing buoyancy and surface durability.
Automated braiding machines are used to create 8 or 12 individual strands, depending on the rope’s design:
- For 8-strand ropes: 8 spools of UHMWPE-PP core yarn (as the strand’s core) and 8 spools of PP outer yarn (as the strand’s sheath) are fed into a circular braider. The machine weaves the PP outer yarn tightly around the core, forming dense, uniform 8 strands.
- For 12-strand ropes: The process is scaled to 12 spools of core yarn and 12 spools of outer yarn, with adjusted braiding tension to maintain consistency across more strands.
Each strand is wound onto large spools after braiding, with tension controlled to avoid tangling or deformation.
The 8 or 12 pre-made strands are loaded onto a large-scale braiding machine for the final rope construction:
- The machine braids the strands in a double-braided or single-braided pattern (depending on load requirements): Double braiding adds an extra layer of durability for heavy ships, while single braiding optimizes flexibility for smaller vessels.
- During braiding, buoyancy is calibrated: The PP content (which drives floatation) is monitored to ensure the rope remains fully buoyant in saltwater—tests are conducted mid-production to confirm it does not sink when submerged.
- Surface Treatment: The finished rope undergoes a smooth coating process (using PP-based wax) to reduce friction—critical for preventing wear when the rope rubs against ship hulls or dock pilings.
- Cutting & Spooling: The rope is cut to standard marine lengths (e.g., 50m, 100m) and wound onto marine-grade spools (resistant to saltwater corrosion).
- Quality Checks: Rigorous tests are performed, including:
- Tensile strength testing (to meet ship mooring load standards).
- Abrasion resistance testing (simulating contact with rocks or metal).
- Buoyancy testing (submersion in saltwater for 24 hours to confirm floatation).
- UV resistance testing (exposure to simulated sunlight to check for brittleness).
- Large Commercial Ships: Used as mooring lines for cargo ships, tankers, and container vessels (5,000+ DWT) when berthing at ports or docks. The UHMWPE’s high strength withstands the ships’ weight and tide/wind forces, while buoyancy prevents the rope from sinking and getting tangled in underwater obstacles (e.g., anchors, seabed debris).
- Mid-Sized Vessels: Ideal for ferries, cruise ships, and fishing trawlers—its flexibility allows easy tying to bollards or cleats, and the 8/12-strand structure ensures even load distribution during rough weather.
- Yachts & Recreational Boats: For luxury yachts or sailboats, the rope’s lightweight (compared to traditional steel cables) and buoyancy make it easy to handle, while its UV resistance maintains performance during long-term mooring in coastal marinas.
- Offshore Platform Mooring: Used to secure temporary offshore platforms (e.g., oil exploration support platforms, fish farming cages) to the seabed. Its saltwater resistance prevents degradation, and buoyancy ensures the rope stays visible on the water surface for maintenance checks.
- Coastal Rescue Vessels: Employed as mooring lines for lifeboats or rescue ships during emergency operations. The rope’s floatation allows rescuers to easily locate it in rough seas, and its high strength ensures the rescue vessel remains stable while retrieving survivors.
- Dock Stabilization: Used to secure floating docks or piers to fixed pilings in coastal marinas. The 8/12-strand braiding resists abrasion from dock movement (caused by waves), and buoyancy prevents the rope from dragging on the seabed and wearing down.
- Temporary Mooring for Visiting Vessels: Provided as rental mooring lines in marinas for boats staying short-term (1–7 days). Its durability handles frequent tying/untieing, and its floating design reduces the risk of the rope getting caught in boat propellers.
- Ship-to-Ship Transfer: Used as "breast lines" to keep two ships aligned during cargo transfer (e.g., fuel or food resupply at sea). The rope’s flexibility absorbs slight ship movements, while strength prevents separation during transfer.
- Underwater Construction Support: For marine construction projects (e.g., building jetties or underwater pipelines), the rope is used to secure equipment (e.g., dredgers, concrete blocks) to floating barges. Its buoyancy keeps the rope accessible, and UHMWPE strength withstands the weight of heavy construction materials.
